Researching Files at the BBFC

Students and researchers are often keen to look at the papers and reports archived by BBFC staff over the years. Since 1912 the BBFC has accumulated more than 60,000 historic records relating to classification decisions. These files are available for research purposes on the premises. Originally noted in Film Registers, from around the late 1950’s onwards there are paper files giving all the details of a film's passage through the Board.

These files vary in size and content, but are usually printed or hand-written hard copy, and consist of Examiner reports, correspondence with the film company and measurement records (files may also contain correspondence from Local Authorities and relevant organisations).

Any work that is over twenty years old is available for research and we welcome enquiries to view film files.

If you wish to view records that we have, please contact helpline@bbfc.co.uk

If you can provide a list of titles and release dates, we will check the availability of each file. We will then contact you regarding an appointment to come in and view. Files are viewed in our HQ at Soho Square in London.

Costs:

As a non-profit-making organisation, we only charge for this service if we have to recall a box from our external archive.  The cost is £16.74 for up to four boxes.

You will need to complete a Copyright Acceptance Form before viewing which will give full terms and conditions. For a copy of the form please contact helpline@bbfc.co.uk
