Racism, including racist language, is offensive to many people. It can also be harmful if it promotes or encourages racist attitudes. The BBFC is concerned about the treatment of racism in films. It may affect the classification of a work. To be acceptable at the junior categories, a racism theme should carry a clear message that racism is wrong. Any racist language, including racial expletives, is unlikely to be acceptable at the most junior categories. Difficult racial themes are more likely to be passed at higher categories. Any work which is in breach of UK legislation on race, including incitement to racial hatred, will be cut. At all classification levels, the BBFC is concerned with works which, taken as a whole, endorse or promote racism.
Similar considerations will bear on our treatment of other forms of prejudice (directed against, for example, religious or sexual minorities, disabled people etc.).
