Teachers TV

Follow this link to a documentary made with Teachers TV in which examiners talk through the process of classification.

The short documentary can be downloaded from the Teachers TV website and is also available on the BBFC DVD Resource – Behind The Scenes At The BBFC. It provides an excellent introduction to classification and the surrounding issues.

The documentary contains excerpts from feature films. Like all resources it should be watched in full before showing to students. Using clips from a range of high profile films from recent years (including Borat and Casino Royale), film examiners explain how they take difficult decisions about which certificate to award a film.

There is discussion of classification issues such as violence, language and offence, how decisions reflect public opinion, how public opinion changes and how the BBFC create working guidelines. There is brief focus on the ‘12A’ / ’15’ borderline and how context is addressed throughout the classification.
